Kana has previously worked at architecture firms in the U.S. and Japan. She became interested in specializing in architectural lighting design after reading Praise of Shadows by Junichiro Tanizaki, which taught her to see both light and shadows as beautiful materials that enhance users’ experience. She became interested in bringing more appreciation of darkness to lighting design projects.

Kana's lighting design centers on creating comfortable and interactive space and incorporating sustainability strategies into lighting design projects.

Kana earned her Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Design from the University of Washington. She is working towards earning her graduate degree in the Master of Architecture with Lighting Design Certificate, Design Computing Certificate, and Sustainable Systems and Design Degree Option.
